The Following of the Star Florence L Barclay 9781495384141 Books

What a lovely read this is! It is free on Kindle, and centers around a minister who has been sent home from Africa in order to recuperate from debilitating fevers. Ahead of his return to the mission field, he agrees to take a temporary position filling in for the elderly pastor of a congregation who is himself recuperating from an illness. The ailing pastor, the author tells us, preaches sermons no one listens to, and the whole dynamic of the congregation is depicted with humor and insight.

The minister, named David Rivers, is zealous, but in a way that is completely attractive, because he's neither a caricature nor too good to be true. Don't get me wrong, though. He is good, and it's the type of goodness that springs from a faith that is authentic, and an upbringing of nurturing love and security. The author, Florence Barclay, is able to depict him in a way that is delightful and realistic.

When David Rivers arrives and preaches his first evening service, a woman walks in late, and from then on, he calls her, in his own mind, "The Lady of Mystery." He is quietly intrigued, in great part because she's the only one in the congregation who seems to listen and to get anything out of his preaching.

As his time winds to a close, The Lady of Mystery invites David to her home for a meal, because she needs his help and advice. David knows he's headed back to his mission in Africa, so his heart and mind are free and able, so he thinks, to deal very objectively with the lady. The Lady wants nothing to do with men, so she knows she is doubly safe seeking out David.

If you love an old-fashioned, well-told Victorian-era story [there are automobiles and electric lights], with characters that are well-developed, attractive and *human,* and you don't mind that Scripture and religious themes are heavily woven into the tale, then this is a novel you will greatly appreciate.

Highly recommended

I really enjoyed this book. I an American but have visited the UK quite a bit.
This story made me feel I was there, and that's a good thing. It is a dear sweet story. Inspirinational!!!
If you read one of Barclay's books, you'll want to read them all. Her insight into human experiences is enlightening and her method of writing is both easy reading and deep thought. Those who love England and the way the English express the thoughts and actions of the inner person will appreciate this book from beginning to end.
I was privileged to read this truly wonderful story, available in 's free books and written by admirable volunteers . Thank you !
What a beautiful, heartrending story that, I believe, could only have been written by somebody who read the Bible with true Christian insight. I would recommend it to anyone with a believers heart and to those who would like to see real and inspiring Christian faith manifested in a touching and captivating way. Once more, one of those stories that makes you read on long after everybody else is fast asleep. if you want your faith strengthened and your heart uplifted do not hesitate to read this book by Florence L. Barclay.
This author died in 1921 so these are pretty old for modern readers. I was so entranced with The Rosary that I am constantly on the lookout for her books. This particular book has characters that appear in The Rosary but the stories are very independent. I am drawn to simple ones like this that require the people in it to come to understand their own motives and accept the other unconditionally. Plus there is a strong faith or God,if you will, component. I have been reading and rereading Florence Barclay for almost Fifty years. It looks like she will always take my heart.
The Following of the Star by Florence L. Barclay is a very touching Christian Romance. It is about a Minister, who is going to be a Missionary to Africa and the woman he falls in love with before going to Africa. It has strong Christian values and teachings all through the book and is one of the sweetest love stories I have ever read. I love Florence L. Barclay's books and I was very happy to obtain it on my . I would highly recommend this book.
Sometimes a beautiful love relationship develops from respect or from having christian beliefs. David and Diana are married because Diana needs to satisfy the terms of a codicil to her uncle's will. They meet during xmas season when David is preaching at the local church and Diane identifies him as the person who would exactly fit and meet the conditions for the type of marriage she wants. With a husband who is a dedicated missionary to Africa in poor health it seems that they will never live as man and wife. This suits Diana perfectly as she has no intention of falling in love. David's preaching, his love of God, his tender heart are all attractions which slowly change Diana's firm resolve. This is a must read to discover how the elements of gold, frankincense and myrrh are woven into the narrative. All three mingled together with pain, self -denial and eventually bliss produce the kind of love that is sweetest, tenderest, and most enduring. "Weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning".
